World Blood Donor Day
Make Every Drop Count
Donate Blood; Save Lives…
(Issued in public interest by Srijan – Building values)
Millions of people in India die every year in the absence of safe blood as well as the sheer lack of donated blood. Despite being a nation with a population of over 1.3 billion people, India faces an average blood shortage of 3 million units. According to a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report, only nine million units are collected annually, while the requirement is for 12 million units. Transfusion of blood and blood products save millions of lives every year. They are essential components in the proper management of women suffering from bleeding associated with pregnancy and childbirth; children suffering from severe anemia due to malaria and malnutrition; patients with blood and bone marrow disorders inherited disorders of hemoglobin and immune deficiency conditions; victims of trauma, emergencies, disasters, and accidents; as well as patients undergoing advanced medical and surgical procedures. So, it is important that people in the need should have access to safe blood and that too on time.
On World Blood Donor Day, let’s take a collective pledge to donate blood and spread awareness in the society about blood donations to ensure that all individuals and communities have access to affordable and timely supplies of safe and quality assured blood and blood products, as an integral part of universal health coverage.
