“Delete Drugs Or They Will Delete You From This World”
Stay HEALTHY, Say NO to DRUGS
(Issued in public interest by the Srijan Ka Sankalp.)
Let there be Drug education at our academic institutions
Drug abuse in India has reached an alarming proportion with an increasing number of school and college going students are falling prey to this vicious drug racket. That increasing dependence on drugs is spoiling both the lives and careers of youths, especially students. The menace of drugs and alcohol has woven itself deep into the fabric of our society. According to available reports, more Indian youngsters are currently struggling with addiction than ever before. Peer pressure, adolescent immaturity and irresponsible parenting are like a three-headed monster luring our children, students towards drug addiction.
According to the Magnitude of Substance Use in India survey conducted by the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) of AIIMS, till 2018, there were 16 crore people in the country who were reportedly consuming alcohol, which is more than the combined population of 172 countries in the world. In addition to this, over 3.1 crore Indians are reportedly using cannabis products, Bhang, Ganja, Charas, Heroin, and Opium, in last one year. 72 lakh of these drug users are addicted to them and unfortunately, only one in 20 drug addicts get treatment at a hospital. According to the survey, nearly one in five alcohol user suffers from dependence and needs urgent treatment, pegging the number of people who need urgent treatment at around 3.2 crore people. Among all the Indian states, the state of drug abuse in Punjab is the worst where about 75% of its youths are severely addicted to drugs. It is high time we woke up to this vicious drug menace which more than anything else is spoiling and killing  India’s future. To eliminate drug abuse, we need to start drug education in our course curriculum at school and college level so that our children could know the grave dangers of drug addictions and stay away from it since their formative years.
